Decisive Moments: a photography assignment

For this assignment I wanted to try and capture decisive moments and while I was shooting I found myself drawn to the people who were walking alone. The day was rainy and windy and a lot of people were hurrying to where they needed to be. So the four pictures I choose were lonely people trying to go where they needed to be on a crappy day.

Work In Progress: week eleven

I made some progress with my illustrations for the Great Gatsby. I’ve finally gotten comfortable with a sort of sketchy medium and I really like how it’s turning out. Working with the charcoal gives a lot of texture and also helps bring the essence of the time into my work.

Now all I have to do is work with the margins and figure out which senses I want to illustrate. Hopefully I’ll be able to put that together by next week. I’m going to need more than one cup of coffee that’s for sure.

Second Chance: a photo assignment

I took a second shot at portraits because my first ones did not turn out the way I wanted them too. I asked one of my best friends to pose for me.

I had her stand up against a white wall next to three big windows. The light from the windows was perfect and gave me this beautiful softness.

I positioned her very casually and then started cracking a bunch of jokes, trying to make her laugh. I wanted these pictures to be beautiful and real.

I was influenced by the photographer who I wrote my research paper on Vivian Maier who was a very talented street photographer.

This assignment has been something I have been working on for the past couple of months. I struggled a lot with this whole process. We had to make a brand that represented us as a person and also as an artist. There were multiple different steps to this process.

During the discover phase we were asked to come up with three different words that described who we were. After we figured that out, we had to decide on a typeface that fit those three words. After a typeface was chosen we were asked to create an icon that showed who we were. Those parts were easy for me.

When it came to the design part is when i struggled. We were asked to create a full brand, including a business card, an envelope, a thank you card, a portfolio cover and display page, a resume, a letterhead, and a bio. Putting all this together was very challenging for me. I started out with a coffee design and for some reason just didn’t feel like it was me. So I changed it to a very delicate watercolor pattern.

When I showed my teacher she too thought that the watercolor suited me a lot more than the coffee idea. I played with some placement and moved things around multiple times, trying to make it perfect.

Once everything was in place, I rearranged the items of my brand on an 11in x 17in board for presentation. I’m glad I finally was able to find something that represented me as a person and an artist, This assignment really helped me to see who I am.

Work In Progress: week ten

Our newest assignment is to create an exposition book. The topic that I chose is coffee around the world. I’ve done some research and looked into some of the top producers in coffee. I’m planing on doing some watercolors and playing around with come coffee beans.

For each country I would like to go into how people say coffee, how people drink coffee, how people make coffee, how it is grown, and a little bit of history on how coffee became popular.

The four countries I choose are:

I put the coffee beans on the scanner and looked up some typefaces that gave me the feeling of the country.  I also played with some patterns on coffee mugs from these countries.

The first one is from Indonesia and the second is from Vietnam.

Stay tuned!

Work in Progress: week nine

daisy Car Jordan

For my latest illustration project we have to pick a well-known book to do illustrations for. I chose the Great Gatsby. It is one of my favorite books and illustrating it has been so much fun.

I started with some character sketches of Daisy.

Then I added some concept sketches of the car that Gatsby drove.

And I ended with some character sketches of Jordan and Tom.

That’s as far as I am now but hopefully I’ll have more to show soon.
